This oil portrait depicts a black woman, probably a domestic servant, peeling apples. Most African Americans in Texas during the Republic period were enslaved. Slave life varied depending on the plantation, masters and overseers. The domestic servants formed part of the plantation elite, often receiving better clothing and food.
