Portable desk

1800-1900

A desk was a necessity for ship officers in order to help them keep track of records, to view charts, and to keep accurate logs of their journey, as well as a place to compose letters. Since men were away from home for such long periods of time it was essential that they be able to stay organized while on their voyages.
