Toothbrush

19th century

Evidence for toothbrushing dates back to the Egyptians and although mass produced by 1780 in England, the first patent for a toothbrush in America was in 1857 by American H.N. Wadsworth. He designed a complex bone handle through which boar hair was threaded. A specialized child's toothbrush like this ivory or bone example would have been a luxury item during the Republic and not very common.
