Woven ash basket

19th century

Woven baskets usually start from a hoop and are made using a warp and weft system. Small trees, 4-6 inches in diameter, are riven (split) into weaving elements (splints) that are then soaked in boiling water to make them soft. Sturdier splints are nailed to the hoop to make a frame (or warp) and thinner splints are used to weave (the weft). This basket is probably made from ash splints and is roughly made. It would have been used for gathering items from the garden, including all varieties of vegetables, fruits, or flowers.
