Coin

1836

This coin is a copper United States penny. Most of the currency being produced at this time was made locally and used throughout a regional area, such as Washington County. This limited usage created many problems with counterfeit currency and a less efficient means of purchasing goods throughout the state. After the revolution that occurred in 1836, there was a movement by President Sam Houston to enact a more stable and uniform set of currency for the citizens of the new Republic of Texas to use to buy and sell land, animals, and other goods.
