Butter churn

1870-1945

Most families had a dairy cow that provided them with milk to drink. After a cow was milked, a portion of the milk was set aside to be made into butter. Butter was made in a churn with a dasher that was pumped up and down to create butter. One of the chants people did when waiting for the milk to become butter goes like this, " Come, butter come. Come, butter come. Samantha's standing by the gate. Waiting for her butter cake. Come, butter come."
