Dinner knife

19th century

Before forks were introduced, dinner knives were originally used to spear food, in order to move the food from the plate to the person's mouth. The pointed tip on the knife allowed it to pierce the food easily. After the fork became a common household item, the tip of the knife became more rounded, like the one seen here. Food was shoveled onto the knife, then lifted to the mouth.
