Pill roller

mid-19th century

The base of the pill roller was fixed with a plate of brass grooves that correlated with the brass grooves fixed to the top rolling piece. Pills were fashioned into manageable rolls by pressing the powder between the brass plates. The rolls were then cut into small tablets according to the prescripted amount. The physician's assistant would usually make his own medicines with the aid of a mortar and pestle, balance scales and spatulas, and a pill roller.
