Syringe

19th century

A clyster is the antiquated term for performing an enema with a clyster syringe. Enemas introduce liquids into the colon or rectum with a variety of intentions in mind. Historically, clysters were used to relieve constipation and thought to have a variety of medical benefits for a patient, such as curing a stomach ache or easing the pains of childbirth.
