Piano

1825

This is a pianoforte made from rosewood by T. Volney in Boston, Massachusetts. Pianos were found in the Republic in spite of their cost and the difficulty of transportation. A cheap pianoforte, as they were called, cost approximately 200 dollars and by the early 19th century the piano had become "a badge of gentility." Robert Kleberg brought the first piano to Texas in 1834; Kleberg was a Texian pioneer, veteran of San Jacinto, judge and resident of DeWitt County.
