Shackles

19th century

These shackles were made of strong iron. The clasps folded around the ankles in much the same way handcuffs wrap around the wrists. The iron ball attached to the shackles would have greatly inhibited the movement of the wearer, which was ideal for immobilizing a criminal or to stop slaves from running away.
