Whetstone

19th century

Whetstones, like this one, were used to sharpen various blades found in a carpenter's tool box. The blade would be drawn across the stone in various directions until the desired sharpness was reached. Different types of stones were used for different tools. This whetstone was mounted on a wooden block for easier handling.
