Nail nippers

19th century

Nail nippers were used for trimming excess length from the horse shoe nail prior to clinching. Clinching is where the blacksmith would turn down the part of the nail that was exposed on the top of the hoof, forming a clamp. Nail nippers were sometimes also used to trim the horse's hooves before applying the horse shoe.
