Scissors

19th century

Because sewing and textiles were so important in early settler life, scissors would have been a necessity. The earliest known scissors date to the Middle East 3,000-4,000 years ago but it was not until 1761 that the first pair of modern-day scissors made in London by Robert Hinchliffe. These scissors are decorated with a geometric design on the handle and have finger holes bent in a shape more conducive to the hand. Sewing scissors are particularly specialized by having one sharp end and one blunt end to enable intricate cutting of cloth.
