Brass box sextant

1826-1922

Sextants were one of the most important instruments on a ship, so much so that every ship was required to have one before it was allowed to set sail. Sextants were essential in helping to navigate and accurately choose a course to follow. They can be used to find the ship's position by measuring angles between the earth, sun, and stars.
