Deadeye

19th century

A deadeye was used on sailing ships to help ease the tension on the mast and bow. The deadeye also helped to adequately handle the stress the sails would be placed under. Various pieces of rope were slipped in and out of the holes located on the deadeye. Deadeyes were then placed in pairs and a pulley system enabled them to relieve the tension on the sails.
