Quilt

1873

This is a pieced quilt featuring a windmill type pattern. Making a pieced quilt was not common before 1840, which is when factory manufacturing of textiles became more common. Ordinary women no longer had to spend hours a day spinning and weaving. At last women could find the time to be more creative, including the sewing of quilts. This quilt was made in 1873 by Frances Grigsby Smyth, the wife of George Smyth, a signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence.
