Grease horn

19th century

Once a horn has been removed from an animal, the inner portion, formed from living bone, can be separated from the outer sheath of horn. This outer layer can then be used as a durable, water proof container. These horns were used to hold grease for various tasks, from greasing a wagon wheel to greasing nails to reduce friction.
