Raft shackles

19th century

The method of pinning logs together was replaced by the use of iron raft shackles. Shackles provided the ability for many logs to be lashed together side by side forming a large platform raft. Also, three to four trees could be shackled together to form a snake raft. The option of being able to make smaller rafts was used when maneuvering in smaller, more winding streams, hence the name snake raft.
