Coverlet

1840

The coverlet exhibits a "Boston Town" border with New England style buildings alternating with oriental buildings on the side and larger buildings alternating with palm trees along the bottom. The center pattern differs by showing birds of paradise. The complicated weave was accomplished on a jacquard loom-aided by punched cards that ordered the sequence of threads - similar to the punched-card system used in early years of computing. The double thickness of the coverlet is a "double weave" and was created using two sets of warp and weft threads.
