Dress

1840

This is a silk brocade dress from the 1840s. The dress was made for a young woman (probably about 18 to 21 years old), and it was altered at the waist to be longer as she grew or when someone else wore it. People today are surprised that a young adult woman would wear a dress that was so small in size. However, people in the mid-19th century tended to be smaller than people today due to inadequate nutrition.
