Mitts

19th century

These crocheted mitts are adorned with handmade lace and have open mesh work which features a geometric open diamond decoration. They are made from cotton and have a silk-tasseled string tie to ensure a snug fit. They also have elastic, which is most likely a later addition. Crochet is the process of creating fabric from yarn or thread. Crochet needlework consists of the interlocking of looped stitches formed with a single thread and a hooked needle.
